HouseZero® Featured in BBC Segment: “Staying Cool”

Worldwide, the number of people facing extreme heat exposure is rising exponentially due to climate change, with heat stress being the leading cause of weather-related deaths (WHO). As temperatures continue to soar, air conditioning has become an essential technology; however, increasing reliance on AC is exacerbating global warming, contributing to higher annual electricity consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

In the BBC Radio 4 segment “Staying Cool,” science journalist and author Angela Saini explores the growing reliance on air conditioning and questions how different approaches to building design can help reduce dependence. As part of the nearly 30-minute report, a segment features an in-depth, on-site interview with Ali Malkawi, Founding Director of the CGBC and a behind-the-scenes tour of HouseZero®. In this portion of the program, Dr. Malkawi explains the data-driven design of building and how blending simple design principles and innovative technologies could inform a possible solution to more efficient, carbon-neutral cooling.
