HKS Discussion: America’s Cities—Where Government Gets Things Done

On September 22 at 4:00 p.m. at the Harvard Kennedy School, Scott Smith, the former Mayor of Mesa, Arizona — a large suburb of Phoenix and the 38th largest city in the U.S.– will discuss the role his previous business executive experience and novice status played in dealing with urban issues, including development, governance and sustainability. In his lecture, Smith will explore and attempt to answer two common questions he has received after his tenure as mayor: “Was that business background an asset or an obstacle to making a difference in government? Should we run government like a business?”
